The Classic Crime, The Downtown Fiction
Two bands put their own spin on over-done styles
Turn on the radio and you're bound to hear song after song, each one sounding the same. It's becoming rare these days to hear something different from someone new. Seattle, Wash., alternative band, The Classic Crime has taken the emo/indie sound and are doing something different. The band combines a taste of early-1990s alternative with modern (and popular) emo.
And while Virginia-based band The Downtown Fiction (photo at right) may look like the Jonas Brothers and brand themselves as pop-punk, this band stands out due to the unique vocals of Cameron Leahy. Their music is high-energy and seemingly ready for the Top40 stations. They're doing the same thing as everyone else but sound remarkably different.

Commentary: The appearance double standard
The "just-woke-up" look doesn't work for chicks
There is a double standard afoot. Amongst the many topics that we’ve
touched upon in this column it shouldn’t come as a surprise to regular readers that we’re once again talking about the differences that seem to naturally exist between female musicians in a rock band and guys in rock bands.
We’ve discovered in previous columns that there is no difference between musicians of different genders. Women can play guitar as well as men, they can drum as well, and hell, they can play bass as well. There is no difference in skill set abilities. And yet when a female band takes the stage the expectations are completely different than if a guy band takes the stage.

It's not you, it's them
Band commentary
Everyone who has ever gone through a break up has heard the line before: it’s not you, it’s me. That’s usually not true, its more of a polite way to let someone go (even if we all know better) but for bands, that line couldn’t be more true.
It’s been a very recent revelation but I’ve noticed that depending on where your band is located you may never play to a full house of screaming fans.
