Community Gun – Community Gun EP – 4.5 stars
Community Gun is what you expect when you think New York City punk circa 1970s. It's rock. It's blues. It's indie. It's punk. The band's self-titled EP has grit inside – a lot of it.
Think Lou Reed. Think the Pogues. And at times think of Elvis Costello. This is 1970s folk indie punk with roots rock and roll influences.
There's not a lot of modern music that could be compared to Community Gun and their second EP release. The closest we can get for a modern comparison is along the lines of the White Stripes but with more instruments and vocals that didn't leave our ears bleeding.
That said, Community Gun is nothing that you would expect. "James Brown" is gritty, simple rock while "Midnight Moses and Elaine" is blues rock, with a swing beat. "Ain't Quite Like Before" sounds like original thrash punk (before punk became an image) and "Before She Goes" and "Wasted" are upbeat numbers in stark contrast to the ballad "Think of Me." At their best, Community Gun combines blues and a Tom Waits/Bob Dylan/Jim Morrison rasp. If that description does nothing for you then consider this band a dirty blues-rock band. Beck with the blues, if you will.
It's hard to deny that this is a band that isn't afraid to embrace their roots and we thank them for that. When most bands sound the same, Community Gun is a breath of fresh air with their rough sound. Their newest self-titled release is a great listen. We're eagerly awaiting their a full-length release from these guys.
